Never Change a Winning Team: Towards Modelling Syntactic Priming in Language Production

چکیده

Numerous connectionist models of language production have been proposed in the literature. Most of these models exclusively refer to the process of phonological encoding. One exception is the so called “Illinois Model” which simulates grammatical encoding, especially experimental findings of structural priming. In this paper, we propose an alternative account within the localist connectionist paradigm. This account covers the priming data as well as other phenomena of syntactic processing, i.e. some aspects of agrammatic and paragrammatic language production.

The Impact of Syntactic Priming on English Language Learners' Production: A Transfer Study of Indirect Questions/Requests

This study examines the impact of syntactic priming on production of indirect questions/requests by Persian learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). Eighty learners participated in two experiments investigating the impact of syntactic priming on oral production and the possibility of transfer of the priming effects to a different modality. A Production experiment showed that priming res...

Syntactic priming in language production.

People have a tendency to repeat the types of sentences they use during language production. Recent experimental work has shown that this phenomenon is at least partly due to 'syntactic priming', whereby the act of processing an utterance with a particular form facilitates processing a subsequent utterance with the same or a related form. In this review, we first provide an overview of the evid...

Syntactic facilitation in agrammatic sentence production.

Recently, proposals have been made to relate processing difficulties in aphasic language performance to limitations in resources for grammatical processing (Carpenter et al., 1994; Hagiwara, 1995; Kolk, 1995; Martin & Romani, 1994). Such proposals may account for a defining characteristic of agrammatic sentence production: reduced syntactic complexity. Syntactic structures that require deep hie...

Computational Modelling of Structural Priming in Dialogue

Syntactic priming effects, modelled as increase in repetition probability shortly after a use of a syntactic rule, have the potential to improve language processing components. We model priming of syntactic rules in annotated corpora of spoken dialogue, extending previous work that was confined to selected constructions. We find that speakers are more receptive to priming from their interlocuto...

Syntactic priming reveals the influence of contextual and interactional information on syntactic processing

This chapter is concerned with how the ability of speakers and writers to produce syntactic structures is constrained by contextual and interactional factors. During language production we are often faced with a choice between syntactic alternatives. These syntactic alternatives are different in terms of their surface structure while being very similar in meaning, for example: an active versus ...
